Five VVM Columnists Honored in National Column-Writing Awardsnew
SF Weekly's Katy St. Clair took home a first-place Humor column award from the National Society of Newspaper Columnists in its annual contest. Roy Edroso of The Village Voice, Stephen Lemons of Phoenix New Times, and Chuck Strouse and Elyse Wanshel, both of Miami New Times, were also recognized by the group.

Who Knew? Phoenix New Times Staffer Heads to the Maccabiah Gamesnew
The U.S. is sending nearly 1000 athletes to compete in the Maccabiah Games, the event sometimes referred to as the "Jewish Olympics" that takes place next month in Israel. Jewish News of Greater Phoenix reports that one of the competitors is none other than Phoenix New Times senior staff writer Paul Rubin, who will be on the men's fast-pitch softball team in the masters division. It won't be Rubin's first time at the games; he's a veteran, having won two gold medals and one silver medal while playing softball for the U.S. in 1985, 1989 and 1993. "Representing your country and your religion is a very important honor, and I'm taking it very seriously," he says.

Phoenix New Times Scribe Wins Livingston Awardnew
John Dickerson has been named the 2008 Livingston Award winner for local reporting for "The Doctor is Out," a three-part series on medical standards and regulation in Arizona. The Livingstons are limited to journalists under the age of 35 and are the largest all-media, general-reporting prizes in the country. This marks the second year in a row that an alt-weekly has won the award, which comes with a $10,000 prize. Dickerson's series is also an AltWeekly Award finalist in the investigative reporting category.

Arizona Alt-Weeklies Win Big in State Press Contestnew
Between them, Phoenix New Times and the Tucson Weekly won 26 excellence in journalism awards in the Arizona Press Club's annual contest. New Times took home 19 awards, including first-place wins for Arts Writing or Criticism; Blogging; Children, Families and Seniors Issues Reporting; Features Column Writing; Growth and Development Reporting; Public Safety Reporting; and Sports Enterprise Reporting. The Weekly won seven awards, including a first-place finish in the Film, Video and Television Writing or Criticism category.

Three Young Alt-Weekly Writers in Running for Livingston Awardsnew
Phoenix New Times' John Dickerson, Style Weekly's Amy Biegelsen and The Village Voice's Elizabeth Sara Dwoskin have all been named finalists in the 2008 Livingston Awards for Young Journalists competition. The Columbia Journalism School, an AAN associate member, has two current students and six alums among the finalists as well. The winners of the Livingstons, which award three $10,000 prizes to journalists under the age of 35, will be announced June 3.

AAN Members Fare Well in 'Best of the West' Awardsnew
Westword's Adam Cayton-Holland finished first in Arts and Entertainment Writing, while fellow Westword scribe Jared Jacang Maher finished third in the same category. Phoenix New Times took a second place win for Environment and Natural Resources Reporting and a third place win for Growth and Development Reporting, while OC Weekly's (not the Orange County Register's, as the award announcement says) "Navel Gazing" blog finished second in the Blog Writing category. The annual contest is open to newspapers and news websites in 13 western states.

Three Alt-Weekly Writers Place in Investigative Reporting Contestnew
Earlier this week, we noted that a piece in the Fort Worth Weekly had won a 2008 Investigative Reporters and Editors (IRE) Award in the local-circulation weeklies category, but we neglected to mention that four other alt-weekly stories were IRE finalists. In the local-circulation weeklies category, Phoenix New Times' John Dickerson had two stories place, while the Houston Press' Chris Vogel had one. In addition, L.A. Weekly's Christine Pelisek was the runner-up for the Tom Renner Award, which is specifically for crime reporting.

Complaint Against Attorney for New Times Probe is Dismissednew
The State Bar has dismissed the final two complaints pending against Maricopa County Attorney Andrew Thomas, including one about his handling of the 2007 investigation of Phoenix New Times that ended with the arrests of Village Voice Media executive editor Michael Lacey and CEO Jim Larkin. "No one in their right mind has ever looked to the Arizona Bar as a beacon of courage, and it has certainly upheld its longstanding reputation with this dismissal today," Larkin says.

Pilot Demands Alt-Weekly's Notes in Suit Against Whistleblowersnew
Last month, Phoenix New Times reported on three flight attendants facing a lawsuit from a US Airways pilot for daring to report their safety concerns to federal regulators. "Now New Times is getting sucked into the litigation," the paper reports. "[The pilot's attorney] filed a subpoena last week demanding that we turn over all our notes, as well as any documents provided to us by the flight attendants." New Times reports that the attorney is also attempting to subpoena information about people who've posted messages on a fund-raising website erected by the flight attendants.

Phoenix New Times Duped by NBA Tattoo Cap Hoaxnew
Takes one to know one? Maybe not. Despite New Times' propensity to publish the occasional tall tale, staff writer Niki D'Andrea admits that this time the paper fell victim to another publication's spoof. In a lengthy cover story about the tattoos of Phoenix Suns basketball players, D'Andrea credulously reported that NBA Commissioner David Stern was proposing a "tattoo cap" limiting each team's "roster as a whole to 61 percent tattoo coverage of the 'upper arms and necks.'" D'Andrea says she picked the story up from Foxsports.com, which posted an item originally published on a blog called the Gerbil Sports Network. Bloggers Alana G, who first caught New Times' mistake, and Heat City, weigh in on the incident.

Pittsburghers Take Offense to Phoenix New Times Storynew
"An article in the free weekly Phoenix New Times is filled with insults about Steelers' fans. The article calls them "grubby, loud and nasty," reports Pittsburgh TV station KDKA. "The insults are not being taken lightly here." The New Times story in question ran as a preview to last weekend's Super Bowl matchup between the Arizona Cardinals and the Pittsburgh Steelers. "That guy from Arizona better come up here and see what it is," one Pennsylvania resident tells KDKA. "Bring his face up here."

Last Year's Arrest of VVM Execs Becomes Campaign Issuenew
Tim Nelson, the Democrat challenging Maricopa County Attorney Andrew Thomas, is running a radio ad accusing Thomas of ordering the October 2007 arrests of Jim Larkin and Michael Lacey because they reported in Phoenix New Times that they had been served a sweeping subpoena from a special prosecutor demanding information about the paper's online readers, Editor & Publisher reports. The ad says Thomas is responsible for "arresting journalists in the dark of night in front of their families because of what they published," and accuses Thomas of using KGB tactics. (New Times reports that Thomas tried to get the commercial pulled from local airwaves.) "Make no mistake about it: the New Times subpoenas and arrests were a massive abuse of power and the public trust," Nelson said at a press conference yesterday. "They have brought ridicule to our county and its justice system."
