Cleveland Scene Names New Editor

Erich Burnett has been named editor of the Cleveland Scene. Burnett is a Cleveland native whose background includes 12 years as an editor of Scene and corporate editor for Scene's previous parent companies, New Times and Village Voice Media. Burnett most recently served as senior editor for Village Voice Media. Burnett took over as editor on April 13. The Scene is part of Times-Shamrock Communications.

Times Shamrock Taps Chris Keating as Scene Publisher

Chris Keating, who was most recently publisher at the San Antonio Current, has been named the new publisher at Times Shamrock sister paper the Cleveland Scene. Replacing Keating in San Antonio will be Michael Wagner, a former publisher of the Riverfront Times. He will take the title of general manager. (FULL STORY)

Appeals Court Upholds Dismissal of Suit Against Cleveland Scenenew

A three-judge panel of the federal 6th Circuit Court of Appeals in December upheld a U.S. District Court's 2008 dismissal of a defamation suit brought against the Scene and one of its reporters by an Ohio doctor. The circuit court found Dr. Edward Patrick failed to demonstrate the threshold requirement of falsity in regards to a 2004 article that the doctor claimed falsely suggested his resume was misleading, his medical credentials were not valid, and that his board certification process was fraudulent.

Ohio Alt-Weeklies Take Home 14 State Press Awardsnew

The Ohio Society of Professional Journalists Awards have announced the winners of its 2009 awards contest. The Cleveland Scene won seven total awards, finishing first for Arts Profile, Media Criticsm, Newsmaker Profile, Public Service Journalism and Rock and Roll Feature Reporting. The Cleveland Free Times, which was merged with the Scene in July 2008, took home two awards, including a first-place win for Consumer Reporting, and The Other Paper of Columbus won five awards.

Cleveland Scene and Reporter Settle Lawsuitnew

The suit against the Times-Shamrock alt-weekly was filed earlier this year by James Renner, who claimed he was unjustly fired over an unpublished story about an alleged affair involving an Ohio state senator and his former campaign aide. The Columbus Dispatch reports that terms of the agreement are confidential.

Judge Removes Politician from Lawsuit by Ex-Scene Reporternew

Ohio state Sen. Kevin Coughlin has been dismissed as a defendant in James Renner's lawsuit over his termination by the Scene, according to the Akron Beacon Journal. The alt-weekly has requested the rest of the suit be tossed out as well; the judge is reportedly considering that request now. Renner's suit alleges he was unjustly fired over an unpublished story about an alleged affair involving Coughlin and a former campaign aide.

Four Ohio Alts Recognized in Statewide Awardsnew

Four AAN members took home a total of 17 awards in the 31st Annual Ohio Excellence in Journalism Awards competition, hosted by the Press Club of Cleveland. The Other Paper was named "Best Non-Daily Newspaper in Ohio: Alternatives," with Cincinnati CityBeat taking second in that category. CityBeat also took home four additional awards, including first-place wins for Multiple Illustrations/One Story, Reviews/Criticism, and Single Illustration. Cleveland's Scene took home five total awards as well, including first-place finishes in the Best Section and Community/Local Coverage categories. The now-shuttered Cleveland Free Times won four awards, including firsts in Covers and Features. And in addition to its first place win mentioned above, The Other Paper was given two other awards.
